If you’ve ever rolled your eyes at the idea of positive affirmations, you’re not alone. I used to think they were just cheesy phrases stuck on Instagram graphics. But after a few tough years and plenty of self-doubt, I gave them a proper go—and I’m glad I did. This is a real look at how affirmations can help you, how to journal with them, and how to make the practice stick, even if you’re a bit of a sceptic.
Let’s be honest: life throws curveballs. Some days, it’s a struggle just to get out of bed, let alone feel grateful for anything. That’s where affirmations come in. They’re not about pretending everything’s perfect. They’re about reminding yourself of your own strength, even when your mind is full of doubt.
You might wonder: do they actually work? Studies show that repeating positive statements can help reduce stress and support mental health, especially when you’re facing challenges. It’s not about ignoring reality, but about building resilience—reminding yourself you can handle what comes your way. Think of affirmations as a mental workout. Just like you wouldn’t expect to get fit after one run, you can’t expect instant results. But over time, these small statements can shift your mindset and help you bounce back from setbacks.
Some days, my affirmation is as simple as, “I can get through this.” Other days, it’s, “I am grateful for how far I’ve come.” Both are valid.
Affirmations aren’t about pretending everything’s fine. They’re about building resilience, one honest statement at a time. If you journal every day, even just a line or two, you’ll start to see your mindset shift. You’ll become more mindful, more grateful, and more in tune with your own strengths. So, here’s your challenge: Pick one affirmation today and write it in your journal. Reflect on how it makes you feel. Repeat tomorrow. Over time, you’ll build a habit that supports your mental health and personal growth—no toxic positivity required.
